Description
To Whom It May Concern:
Besides being a successful and dynamic teacher at all-levels for over 30 years, I have a Ph.D. in musicology (Université de Montreal, 2010). With a concentration in Hispanic music and culture, I have been teaching Spanish in Montreal for the past couple of years. I encourage my students to assimilate the basic grammar structure in addition to submerge them into a rich and diverse language of Cervantes.
As part of my personal background, which two citizenships‒Canadian and Mexican‒I have first hand understanding and knowledge of Hispanic idioms and their popular expressions. Born in Montreal, I grew up in Mexico (I am fluent in Spanish, English and French is not far behind), where I worked for several years as a classical musician. I acquired an intellectual training by studying for a B.A. in Philosophy. Throughout my studies in Canada, I have constantly promoted Hispanic culture and traditions as a significant shaping tool particularly in regards to its identity in the mother countries and the diasporas. In addition, I keep active by giving courses, seminars and conferences at various music departments and at the most important musicological congresses in North America and Europe.
Statement of Research
Flute performer, philosopher and musicologist, I am an up-coming scholar whose research focuses on the intersections between music and the politics, religion and social events. I consider the sounds of culture as determinant aspects of its identity. In particular, how church implemented music in the New World while tensions manifested in the secular milieu, this includes the culture and traditions of visible minorities, i.e., indigenous groups. My academic interests views music as an epistemic source that provides an understanding to issues like language, visual arts, individual liberty, otherness, collective order, cosmopolitism and nationalism.
I have done extensive research in various music religious archives, discovering, organizing, digitalizing and cataloguing hundreds of music manuscripts. You can see my music cataloguing work at Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM: www.######info) data base by consulting Mexico and the music archives of, beside Chiapas, the Cathedral of Tulancingo and the parishes, which is a novelty in Mexico’s musicological research, two parishes in Oaxaca, Suchixtlahauca and Chazumba.
In resume, besides having a rich experience investigation in archives and libraries, I offer a vast experience as a music performer and as expert in Classical and popular music, Hispanic culture, Western Arts and Philosophy.
Best wishes.
